An obituary in the files of Texas Christian University dated November 5, 1896 has this account of Edwin Winston Dabney who is buried in Concord Cemetery. "This heroic soldier of the cross laid his armor by, at the residence of his daughter in Brown County, Texas, at 1 o'clock P. M., Sept. 27, 1896. Brother Dabney moved from Kentucky, in company with his brother, C. I. Dabney (since gone to rest in 1882), and settled in Austin County, Texas, in 1853, on what was afterwards known as Kentucky Ridge. In 1854 they organized the first church of Christ in Austin County, Texas, and not long afterwards moved it to old Concord, which after a few years developed into one of the most noted churches of the State." <---Thanks to Joy Neely (Bellville Historian)for this information!
~ Edwin W. Dabney, was a native of Louisa County, Virginia, born September 21, 1821; was the grandson of Albert G. Dabney and great-grandson of Cornelius Dabney. A. G. Dabney also was born in the Old Dominion. Edwin W. Dabney remained in the state of his nativity but a few years. In 1830 the grandfather, A. G. Dabney, moved to Christian county, Kentucky, with four small boys, his wife having died in 1829 in Louisa County, Virginia. E. W. was raised in Kentucky, in which state he married Miss Hannah G. Dabney, in 1841; in 1853 he removed with his family to Austin County, Texas. He and his wife became the parents of ten children, five of whom are now living,— three sons and two daughters, viz.: E. T., Cornelius, John B., Hannah Elizabeth and Virginia Louisa. The mother of these children died July 2, 1895, at the good old age of seventy-eight years and ten months less one day. Their father is still living, at the age of seventy-four years and ten months, making his home near Belton. He is a minister of the Church of Christ, having devoted much of his life to his holy calling, earnestly laboring for his fellow men. [History of Texas, Central Texas Vol I, Lewis Publishing, 1896 |
