Florence Marie Svoboda, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, Texas. She was born January 20, 1921 in Wallis, Texas and was a lifelong resident of Wallis and a parish member of the Guardian Angel Catholic Church. In her youth Florence was the church organist and during World War II worked in Houston at a munitions plant. She would commute to Wallis from Houston on every weekend using the dinky train.
Florence knew many people in Wallis and the surrounding area because she worked at Dick's Grocery store and then the local post office until her retirement. She was a member of KJZT for over 75 years , Catholic Daughters of America, and volunteered at many American Legion and church events. All her life she was an excellent cook and ardent gardener. Her last vegetable garden contained over fifty varieties of tomatoes, okra, squash, and onions. She and Charlie were a fixture at the bingo games in Wallis, Sealy, Columbus, Rosenberg, and Needville. Due to ill health, in her later years Florence resided at the Legacy Campus in Bay City, Texas to be near her family. She is predeceased by her husband of sixty one years, Charlie Svoboda; her parents, Louis and Bessie Peter; and her two brothers, Leon and Jerry Peter. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Texana Melinda Peter; nieces and nephews, Mary Peter Cudd (Mike), Helen Peter, Louis Peter (Debbie), Kathleen Svoboda Parker, Joe Patrick Svoboda, Sandra Svoboda Payne; and many great-nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015, with viewing from 12:30 - 1:30, rosary at 1:30, and mass at 2:00 p.m. at Guardian Angel Catholic Church, Wallis, Texas. www.knesekfuneralhome.com. |
