Obituary
2024
Joetta “Jo” Brown Mayo Looney, 92, of Bellville, Texas, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024, peacefully at her home.
She was born in Sasakwa, Oklahoma, on August 21, 1931, to Guy Oren “Bill” Brown and Minnie Elizabeth Lacy on her parent’s wedding anniversary. Her family settled in Uniontown, Arkansas where she graduated from Cedarville High School. She was the Valedictorian of her class and was always quick to remind us “yes, but there were only 12 in my class”! After graduation, she went to Droughn’s Business College to learn shorthand and typing. She married Eugene Mayo, and they had one daughter, Terry. This marriage would later end in divorce. In 1968, she met and married Richard “Dick” Looney while working at Wilfred Hall Hospital in San Antonio, Tx. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage. She had a full career working in the Civil Service. In 1970, she and husband, Dick, and a few other partners, established New Braunfels Aero Service the Fixed Base Operation of private aircraft in the city of New Braunfels. There began an interesting career. Dick did the flying; partner Frank Adams and Jo did the administrative and finance work. She did whatever was needed, gassing airplanes, all the bookwork before computers on ledgers, and waitressing or cooking if needed at the café at the airport. Jo and Dick retired early from their lucrative business and started traveling the country in a motorhome for 18 years. They were able to see the United States and all the countryside it has to offer from east to west and north to south. 17 years ago, Jo was ready to settle back down and be closer to family. They bought property in Bellville across from Terry and Jim and built their home. She loved to work in the yard, flowers, and garden. Many people driving down 159W enjoyed the manicured yard she kept and remarked how active she was for her age. She liked it perfectly, even in 104-degree weather! She loved and enjoyed her family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was a pioneer woman who taught us how to survive life and be a strong woman. She loved her husband and “took care of her man”. Her son-in-law, Jim, described her as the sweetest and best mother-in-law. She will be missed however her legacy of nothing is too tough for a woman to tackle will live on forever. She was preceded in death by her parents: Guy and Minnie Brown; sister-in-law: Doris Brown; niece: Lynn Brown; and grandson: Roger Godwin. She is survived by her husband: Richard Looney of Bellville; daughter: Terry Godwin and husband, Jim, of Bellville; brother: Bob Brown of Arkansas; sister-in-law: Janice Fisher and husband, Richard, of New Mexico; grandchildren: Kellie Sartain and husband, Jason, of Bellville, Brian Jeffries and wife, Lindsay of Cat Spring, Sophia Bramley and husband, Ian, of Willis, and Chris Godwin of Marble Falls; niece: Jan Brown of Arkansas; nephew: Mike Brown of South Dakota; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
