Our Blessed and Highly favored Melba “Meme” Twiggs a longtime resident of Brenham, Texas departed this earthly life on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the age of 83.
Melba was born on March 7, 1940, in Kenney, Texas to the late Major Spates Jr., and Mandy Jackson Kesee. She attended Kenney Elementary School in Kenney, Texas. In 1959 she was a proud graduate from Austin County High School in Sealy, Texas. In 1958 she and Lee Arties Twiggs Sr. were united in holy matrimony for 37 years; 5 children were blessed to this union. She lived on a farm with her grandparents after she got married. She confessed her belief in Jesus Christ and was baptized in 1955 and served under the leadership Reverend Walter Fletcher and was a member of Jackson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kenney, Texas. In 1968 she united with St. John Chapel Africa Methodist Episcopal and served under the leadership of the following pastors: Reverend Andrew Jackson, Reverend Dr. Alvin Larke, Jr. and Pastor Dr. Samuel Powell Jr. She served as past chairman of Pastor’s Aide Committee, Assistant Class Leader to Mrs. Holiday, Class #1, Youth Choir Advisors, on the Steward and Stewardess board, Leader Captain (Every Year) on Family and Friends Day. Melba had many employment careers to support her family. She started at a young age working as a housekeeper than over the years she worked for American General Insurance Company for over 17 years, for Brazos Travel Agency over 8 years and then retired from Brentex Mt. Vernon Mills (a textile company) for over 23 years. Melba wanted to help young families in her community with small children, so she opened her own day care center in her home. Melba has been in the Brenham Community since 1960. She did not belong to any organization, but she cooked and baked for many families and friends during their time of loss, sickness, and family reunions. She loved traveling and vacationing on cruises, going to Germany, Hawaii, Connecticut, Washington D.C. On her spare time, she loved gardening. Her favorite was growing and planting greens, plums, and peach trees. She also loved to watch The Young and Restless, and nighttime soap operas. Those who preceded in her transition are her mother; Mandy (Jackson) Kesee, father, Major Spates Jr., one sister, Bessie Marie Johnson, two sons, David Andrew Twiggs and Lee Arties Twiggs Jr. Life Celebrate the Legacy of Ms. Melba Twiggs; three daughters; Jannis Lee, Cynthia Roberts, Yolanda Kay Twiggs, siblings on her mother side; Patsy Traylor, Jimmie Williams, Bobby Kesee, John Kesee, siblings on father side; Bernell Green, Rachael Kellium, Willie M. Dickerson Larry Spates (Mary), Shirley Anderson, Diane Bryd (Billie), 9 grandchildren, and 15 great -grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. |
