2024
Mary Ellen Schomburg (Engelking), age 82, of Cypress, Texas, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024.
Mary was born on June 10, 1941, in Bellville, Texas to William G. “Kelly” and Nonie Mewis Engelking. On August 21, 1960, Mary married the love of her life, Raymond Schomburg of Brenham, Texas, at St. John Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed. Mary and Ray were blessed with daughter Kathryn Renee Cornwall (Schomburg) in June of 1961, and sixteen years later, son Kyle Ryan Schomburg in September 1977. Mary was a businesswoman, volunteer, caregiver, and loving mother and grandmother. She began her career working in banking in Houston, Texas where she excelled as one of the first woman officers in banking. Together Mary and Ray raised Kathy in the Spring Branch area of Houston until she graduated from high school and then moved to Alvin, TX where Kyle was raised. Ray managed the Blue Bell Creameries distribution branch. Mary opened a gift and wedding registry store called The Hummingbird where she found her love of collecting treasures that she adored. After Ray retired from Blue Bell, they moved back to her hometown of Bellville, then years later to Hockley, Texas, and finally to Cypress, Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Mary spent her early years, career, and retirement involved and volunteering in her communities where she had a passion for giving back and helping those in need. She participated in banking organizations, her community churches, and countless local organizations including the American Cancer Society following her mother’s legacy. She was instrumental in organizing her Bellville high school class and family reunions. Mary was known in every community that she lived in as a compassionate and giving person where she took family, friends, employees, and strangers under her wing. Mary and Ray’s (Mimi and Paw Paw) greatest joy were their grandchildren. Seldom did they miss a sporting or special event for their four grandsons and are so proud of the young men they have become. They also welcomed Kathy’s husband Richard’s son, Patrick Cornwall, and daughter Hannah Fay Cornwall as family. Mary is survived by her devoted husband Ray, her daughter, Kathy, and her husband, Richard Cornwall; her son Kyle and his wife Kellie Prosser Schomburg, grandchildren Blake and Chad Cornwall, Nathan, and Nolan Schomburg, great-granddaughter Hannah Fay Cornwall, Chad’s partner Robert Spiegel, nephew Ed Baldwin and his family Melony, Ashley, Austin and Paige Baldwin, Aunt’s Katy Huebner and Mary Mewis, many cousins, nieces, and nephews of the Mewis family, and dear friend Pat Vornkal of Peters. She is preceded in death by her parents, William G. “Kelly” Engelking and Nonie Mewis Engelking, her sister Martha Ann Baldwin and husband James Baldwin, baby brother William G. Engelking, many Mewis family aunts and uncles, and lifelong friend Betty Ann Muery Pacher. Mary (Mimi) will be missed deeply by all that love and know her. She was a wonderful and cherished wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels. Services will be at St. John Lutheran Church on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday the 30th, from 6 pm – 8 pm at the church.
