Funeral services for Joe E. Burttschell, 83, of Sealy, Texas, 3:00 PM, Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sealy, with visitation from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Tuesday, June 5, 2012, also at the church, with Rev. David Vandercook and Rev. Dale Leland officiating.
Joe Burttschell was born on February 24, 1929 to Walter Anton and Laura Brune Burttschell. After graduation from Sealy High School in 1946, Joe attended Tarleton State University for 2 years before transferring to Texas A&M where he was a proud graduate of the Class of '50. On June 3, 1950, he married the love of his life, Alice Vernell Reichardt. Together they raised 4 children, Bill, Kathy, Michael, and John, and danced a million miles together. Joe had a 37-year career with Exxon/Mobil, beginning as a roustabout at the Katy Humble plant and ending as an East Texas Division supervisor. Following his retirement in 1986, he spent many years ranching in Sealy and Cat Spring. In recent years, Joe served both the City of Sealy and the City of San Felipe as Municipal Judge. Joe demonstrated his concern and care of his community through his active membership in numerous organizations, Trinity Lutheran Church, Sealy Lions Club, Sealy Cemetery Association Board, Cat Spring Agricultural Society, Stephen F. Austin Golf Association, Texas A&M Century Club, and Scholarship Chair of the Austin County A&M Club. He was involved with the Sealy Little League for over 30 years where he served in numerous roles, ranging from Coach to President of the League. During his time on the Parks and Recreation Board, he was instrumental in updating the community sports facilities, and after advocating for the creation of a T-ball field was honored to have the T-ball field named for him. His membership in the Sealy Tiger Booster Club spans decades, and he was the recipient of the "Old Man Award" for his support of Sealy Tiger Athletics. An avid sports fan throughout his life, Joe traveled everywhere to watch his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's events, as well as his Texas Aggies, Sealy Tigers, and Houston Astros. He also thoroughly enjoyed times hunting and golfing with family and friends. Whether you knew him as Joe, Joe Edward, JEB, Butch, Judge, Honey, Daddy, or Popo, all knew the same man: a wise, fair, humble man who valued family above all else and who lived his life demonstrating the utmost selflessness and care for others. He was the rare person who truly never said a bad word about anyone. He handled his battle with cancer with great courage, dignity and optimism, and continued to bring joy to the lives of his loved ones and to serve as a role model to the end. Joe was not only a husband, father, uncle, and grandfather, but also a best friend and mentor all those who loved him. Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Alice Burttschell; son, Bill, and wife, Karen, of San Felipe; Kathy, and husband, Joe, of Austin; and son, John, of Cat Spring; in addition to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael. After a long battle with cancer, Joe Burttschell left his loved ones on his 62nd wedding anniversary, June 3, 2012. His family would like to thank the caregivers at MD Anderson Hospital and Life's Solutions Hospice Care, Inc. for their care of this beloved man. Pall bearers are Brad Burttschell, Adam Burttschell, Aaron Gregg, Brock Gregg, Jason Gregg, Ryan Reichardt, Russell Reichardt, David Fait.
