Joe August Janicek was born on March 15, 1931 to August and Angelina (Pilcik) Janicek in East Bernard, Texas. He had 3 brothers, Lawrence Janicek of Wallis, TX, Alphonse Janicek of Sealy, TX, and Marvin Janicek of Hitchcock, TX. Joe was the youngest sibling of the four. He attended school through the 10th grade and while serving in the Army, he received his GED.
Joe Janicek was drafted into the US Army at the age of 21 on August 6, 1952. He was stationed in Germany after basic training. His unit took 18 days to travel to Europe on the USNS General H.F. Hodges. Joe served in the 7th Armored Division and was attached to a tank company where he served 17 months in Germany during the Korean War. Joe returned to the U.S. on the USNS Upshur and was stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas until his separation on June 20, 1954. Joe served 6 more years in the reserves and received his Honorable Discharge in 1960 with the rank of Corporal. After returning home, Joe met the love of his life, Margaret Morris, and they were united in marriage on September 19, 1955 and were blessed with three daughters, Sharon, Norma, and Marsha. Joe worked with Duval Sulphur in Orchard, Texas and was transferred to Tucson, Arizona in 1958. In 1962, Joe became employed with Wyatts Industry in Houston as a stationary engineer before going into his own business. Joe built numerous homes in the community. He formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Frank Mikes, where they developed a strip center in town and also established a residential subdivision now known as Westgate. With a lot of hard work and sweat, Janicek's Plumbing Co. was established in 1962 and incorporated in 1992, 58 years in business and still proudly servicing the community. Joe was known to be a great teacher and had a heart of gold, always willing to help others. Joe also became active in community affairs and served on the First City Council of Wallis after it incorporated and served as Board member for Austin County ESD #3 for many years. He was elected Post Commander of the American Legion Post 200 in Wallis for the years 1970, 1972, and 1973. Joe was an active member of the American Legion Post 200 for 55 years and was very proud of his service and contributions. Under Joe's leadership, the legions began their bingo program which is still going strong and established the Wallis Dance Club. He also booked teenage bands to perform at the Legion Hall in order to make sure his girls were in town and safe; always thinking about his three girls. Joe was a lifetime member of the Guardian Angel Catholic Church as well as a member of the KJT and KJZT family. Joe enjoyed traveling. Vacation trips with his family, whether it was by car or by motorhome. He loved taking his kids and grandkids with him and this is how family traditions began. Collecting rocks while on vacation was a given and many beautiful flower beds have been made. He also enjoyed gambling in Las Vegas and Coushatta, but his vacations with his family were the most important thing in his life. FAMILY WAS HIS LIFE!!! Joe is survived by his wife, Margaret Janicek; daughters, Sharon Martisek and husband, Dan Harvey, Norma Cates and husband, John, and Marsha Macha and husband, Royce; grandchildren, Leann Martisek, Dan Martisek, Jr., John Cates, Jr. and wife, Michelle, Matthew Macha and wife, Christina, Ashely Gerke and husband, Kody, and Greg Macha and wife, Caitlin; great-grandchildren, Blake Alvarado, Cloey Alvarado, Kensley Rose Cates, Karis Noelle Cates, Blayne Supak, Aubrey Saige Gerke, Keagan Steve Gerke, Everly Jo Macha, and new baby-to-be, Maverick James Macha; also survived by sister-in-law, Dolores (Alphonse) Janicek. Preceded in death by his parents, August and Angelina Janicek; brothers, Lawrence, Alphonse, and Marvin; nephew, Gary Janicek; and niece, Karen Teichman. The family would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Father Thuy for his spiritual guidance. We also want to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to all of our family and friends for their kindness, love, and support during our time of loss. A special thank you to Leann Martisek for all of her support that she gave to Popo and for her unconditional love and devotion. It truly was a blessing for us all. Also a special thank you to Greg Macha who also spent a lot of time with Popo talking about all the good times we shared. It truly brightened Popo's days. Joe touched so many lives and will be missed immensely by us all. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2020, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Guardian Angel Catholic Church, 5518 Demel Street, Wallis, Texas, with a rosary at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 17, 2020, at Guardian Angel Catholic Church. Burial will be in Guardian Angel Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dan Martisek, Jr., John Cates, Jr., Matthew Macha, Greg Macha, Kody Gerke, Marvin Janicek, and Chris Janicek. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Janicek, Ronald Janicek, Walt Pumphrey, Tony Luna, Jerry Fabrygel, Leo Kolafa, and Stanley Krol. |
