Thomas Lee Shorts, Sr. was born February 24, 1941 to Ellen Sylvester and Carey Shorts in Bellville, TX., the youngest of his siblings. He grew up in Bellville attending Spicer Elementary School and graduated in 1960 from Austin County High School excelling in football and basketball.
At an early age, Thomas was baptized at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Bellville, TX where he worshipped and served as a child and young man. On February 20, 1960 he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Mildred Joyce Dabney. Shortly afterwards they moved to Houston, TX. and became members of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church under Dr. Rev. E.E. Coates where he worshipped and served as an Usher, Steward and Trustee. While living in Houston he followed his dream and attended Commonwealth College of Science, a college specifically for the funeral industry. In 1996 he joined partnership with Everett Hilliard of Austin County Funeral Home in Bellville, TX with the pledge to provide funeral arrangements with care and comfort to bereaved families. He was dearly loved by his family as a patriarch and will miss his heartfelt prayers and testimonies during our monthly prayer tele-conference calls. Thomas was so cherished in the community that his friends over the years became family. In 2012, Thomas and Mildred relocated to Sealy, TX moved their membership to St. Paul A.M.E. Sealy Circuit, worshipping and serving under Rev. Alma Phillips. Thomas served as a Steward and later as a Steward Emeritus when his health failed. On October 6th, 2015 Thomas was recognized by the Southwest Texas A.M.E. Conference in San Antonio as a “Kingsmen” for years of faithful mission service. He was preceded in death by both parents, and thirteen brothers and sisters. Thomas is survived by wife of 57 years Mildred, daughter Terri Burditt of Round Rock, TX., sons Thomas Shorts, Jr., and Terrence Shorts (Bridgett) of Houston, TX., grandchildren Courtney Burditt (Houston, TX.) Marcus Burditt (Round Rock, TX.), Lamarea Cater (Terrell, TX.), Alivia Carter (Trinity, TX.), Sister Katherine Tate (Houston, TX), Brother Lonnie Sylvester (Houston, TX.), Goddaughter Kimberly Benjamin (Carson, CA.), extended family Everett and Faye Hilliard, Chuck and Almika Pryor, Marshall Walker all of Houston, TX., and a host of nieces and nephews. |
