Henry Lee Shorts was born on October 28, 1916, in Waller County, to Kerie & Birdie Lee Shorts. He was the eldest of three children.
He attended public school in Sunnyside, Texas. In June of 1941, Henry married Nancy Whitley Shorts and to this union a daughter was born. They named her Birdie Jean Shorts. He was drafted into the United States Army on August 12, 1942. He was proud of the time he served his country as an Aviator Engineer. Upon his honorable discharge in October of 1945, Henry came to Houston, Texas. Once settled in Houston, he gained employment with Shell Oil Company in Deer Park, Texas. Henry was employed with Shell Oil for 32 years and retired in 1979. Henry confessed Christ in January, 1981 as a member of East Macedonia Baptist Church. He became a devoted member of the Sunday school, the Brotherhood, the Male Chorus, and the Mass Choir. He remained faithful to each ministry until his illness wouldn’t allow him to serve. Henry was an active member of The American Legion Post 594 and the South Acre Civic Club. In May of 1969 he met and married Cornelia Williams. He remained devoted to her until her death in 2001. Henry is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Samantha Nichols. Henry’s daughter Birdie took special care of him until the Lord whispered “Well done thy good and faithful servant” on December 7, 2012. He leaves to cherish his memories: one daughter, Birdie Jean Carter Shorts; one brother Thomas Lee Shorts (Mildred); two grandsons, Jar’Ron Carter (Maria) and Joseph Carter (Felita), of Houston, TX; two great grandsons, Joseph Carter II and Andre’ Thompson; two very special women he fondly referred to as his other daughters, Doris Perry and Dawn Riggs and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. |
