Pete Manak, 96, of Sealy, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2021. Pete was born October 2, 1924 to parents, Albina and Peter Manak. He was their tenth child and the baby of the family. He grew up on the family farm and went to the Cannon Hill School as a child. He later graduated from Sealy High School in May 1943. In July 1943, he joined the United States Army. He proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant during WWII. He was an antitank gun crewman and participated in conflicts in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, with 2 bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star, the good conduct medal, the Victory Ribbon, and 3 overseas service bars. He was honorably discharged from the army in 1946 and returned home to the family farm.
He enjoyed playing baseball and was known as a power hitter throughout the county. He was scouted by a professional baseball coach but turned down that opportunity to stay at the family farm to care for his mother. He worked for Austin County Precinct 4 Road and Bridge Division for many years and retired after a long and fulfilling career. Upon his retirement, he continued working at the farm where he enjoyed watching his cattle, spending time with his many dogs, and gardening. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, March 8, 2021, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM for Knesek Family Funeral Chapel, 768 4th Street, Sealy, Texas, with a rosary at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 600 Fourth St. in Sealy. Burial will be in Holy Cross - Polish Cemetery. Due to Covid restrictions, masks and social distancing required. The family would like to thank the staff of the Veranda House in Sealy who made his final years comfortable, enjoyable, and safe. |
