Eleanor “Ellie” Steger Maddox, 78, lost her fight with cancer at her home in Sealy, on June 24, 2014, surrounded by loved ones. Ellie was born to Gus Ford Steger and Robbie Lee Wright Steger in Palestine, Texas on Sept. 3, 1935. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1953. A true Texas lady, she lived in several Texas cities before settling in Sealy, where she has resided for the past 34 years. She moved to Sealy after marrying the love-of-her-life, the late Truman A. Maddox, former Sheriff of Austin County, on Feb. 18, 1979. Miss Ellie will be remembered by many for her quick-wit, spirited personality and her love of music, with a soft-spot for country music, Texas honky-tonks and two-stepping. Texas and American history, the military, road trips and also tickling the ivories were all special hobbies. With her passion for history and love for her family, she spent many years tracking her genealogy back several generations, often “dragging” supportive Truman with her across the country to different archives. Ellie, a proud Texan, was a lifetime member of the Austin County Peace Officers Association, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Ellie was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Truman A. Maddox, and her parents Gus Ford and Robbie Lee Steger. She is survived by her four daughters, Pamela Morgan Brittain, Cyndy Morgan Hancock and husband Scott, Janis Morgan Green, and Jackie Morgan Hagens and husband John; two step-sons, Wayne Schavrda and wife Mary and Billy Schavrda and wife Sue; grandchildren, Ryan and Travis Brittain, Tera Dunn Saleman, Robin Hancock Broughton, Michael Hancock, Jeremy Speck, Special Operator First Class Blake Kutach, Benjamin Green, Steven, Katie, Molly, and Jack Hagens; step-grandchildren, Clay and Chase Schavrda, Shannon Stiner, the late Heather Gabbi and Eric Schavrda; brother, Jeff Steger; nephews, Ford and JJ Steger; niece, Lt. Commander Andria Steger Davis; and 10 great-grandchildren.
