Life Sketch
1967
Max Bader, the president of the Austin County State Bank, was born three miles east of the city of Bellville, December 7, 1876, and the years of his maturity have been identified almost entirely with the interests of this city. He was one of thirteen children, eight sons and five daughters, born to Gotlieb Herman and Henrietta (Vogt) Bader, natives of the Fatherland of Germany. Gotlieb H. Bader was sixteen years when he came to this country, and landing at Galveston, Texas, he came from there to Austin County and identified himself with its educational life. In fact, his entire life was devoted to the work of educating the young, continuing on in the profession until his death. He was married aftercoming to Galveston, and with his bride he made the trip to Austin County with an ox team.
Max Bader remained on the home farm in Austin County until eleven years of age, attending the district schools and the Bellville graded school, and after leaving the school room he was employed as a clerk for a short time in a drug store. He then entered the employ of Max Stern, a general merchant, and upon his death eight years later, in 1899, Mr. Bader bought the business of his late employer and moved the stock to McGregor. But after a short time, he sold his interests there and returned to Bellville in 1901, and he has since been engaged in general mercantile pursuits here, enjoying a large and remunerative trade. In October of 1909 he assisted in organizing the Austin County State Bank, which is capitalized at twenty-five thousand dollars, with a surplus of five thousand dollars, and Mr. Bader has served as the president of this bank since its organization. He is one of the representative citizens and businessmen of Austin county, and is particularly well known in banking circles. In 1897 Mr. Bader was united in marriage with Birdie Irving, a daughter of Joseph Irving, deceased, and they have two sons, Leslie and Gillis.
