Elizabeth Struss Ueckert, died Dec. 26, 2014 at Columbus Community Hospital, in Columbus. Rosanna was born on Aug. 16, 1924 in Columbus, to William and Jennie Frels Struss, and was the third of four daughters. A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she was preceded in death by her husband Verdes Ueckert, D.V.M., M.P.H. son Douglas Ueckert, and sisters Ruby Schiller, Roberta Presley and Norma Barrow, Daughter-in law Nicole Ueckert and grandson, Nickolus Ueckert. She is survived by her remaining two sons and daughters-in-law: William (Carol) Ueckert of El Dorado Hills, Calif. and Edwin (Jessica) Ueckert of Bellville; her 6 grandchildren, Paul, Alex, Stacy, Adam, Tess and Kaitlynn; and 4 great grandchildren, London, Scott, Gracie and Harlow. Rosanna Ueckert studied Education at the University of Texas. She and Verdes were married 59 years, and during that time resided in College Station, Berkley, New Orleans, Phoenix and Las Vegas before they returned to Columbus in 1993 to enjoy retirement in Rosanna’s childhood home. Rosanna’s first love was her family. She enjoyed reading, singing and playing music, having been the child of a one-room school teacher near Frelsburg. For years she was an avid flower gardener, until her health limited her to tending indoor plants only. Rosanna was also passionate about tending to her animals (including those in the house and the many stray cats who adopted her). She often referred to herself as “the Columbus Cat Lady.” She also adopted people, and other people adopted her. Rosanna’s sons referred to her as “Mother Earth,” because a lot of their friends would come to her for help and advice, as did her own friends and extended family members who loved her dearly. Services were held at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Saturday Jan. 3, 2015 at noon. Serving as pallbearers were Alex Ueckert, KD Burnhart, Richard Schiller, Al Fonseca, Tim Edmondson, Berkley Sisson, and honorary pallbearer James Wong. Rosanna was laid to rest at the Ueckert family cemetery in Bellville following the service.
