Erna Lucille Swearingen Lesser, 92, was born on Jan. 18, 1922 in Richmond to Lawrence Ross and Hattie Keding Swearingen. Her family moved to Phelps, Texas where she grew up attending school. Her mother died when Erna was 12 years old and she helped her father take care of her younger siblings. Erna graduated from Huntsville High School and then went to Houston Memorial Nursing School and graduated as a registered nurse at age 21. On May 10, 1952 she married Marvin Neal Lesser. They had two daughters, Deborah Kay and Gina Marie. They lived in Houston until 1969, moved to Kenney where they made their home. Neal and Erna owned a bar-b-q cafe named Deb’s in Bellville. Erna worked at the Bellville General Hospital for many years. She was known to many as a very sweet, compassionate nurse. She loved her family and profession, but the most important thing in her life was her love for Jesus Christ. She wanted everyone to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and witnessed often to family members and friends. She loved her church and her Sunday school class and was a faithful, loyal member of the First Baptist Church of Bellville since 1969. Erna is preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, Raymond Swearingen, Alice Swearingen, Grant Swearingen, Ruby Swearingen Lesser, L.E. (Bud) Swearingen, James (Jim) Swearingen, Dorothy Swearingen Stanford, and step children; Martha Lesser Skains and Calvert Neal (Butch) Lesser and great grandson Wyatt Grant Mikeska. Erna went to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 92 on July 23, 2014 in Brenham after being ill for several months. Erna is survived by her daughters Deborah Kay Lesser Noviskie and Gina Marie Lesser Mikeska, and her husband Barry Mikeska. Seven grandsons; Brian Neal Noviskie, Matthew Keith Noviskie, Justin Tre’ Noviskie (wife Erin), Adam Blake Noviskie (wife Megan), Barry Allen (B.J.) Mikeska, Jr. (wife Stephanie), Clinton Grant Mikeska (Kristie Breneman), Jessie Taylor Mikeska (wife Lindsey). Seven great grandchildren; Lance Mikeska, Lexi Mikeska, Barry (Trey) Mikeska,III, Greyson Mikeska, Hayes Mikeska, Wyatt Noviskie and Blakely Noviskie, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends and family. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 3 p.m. from the First Baptist Church, Bellville with Rev. Michael Criner officiating. Interment in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville. Pallbearers were her seven grandsons; Brian Noviskie, Matthew Noviskie, Justin Noviskie, Adam Noviskie, Barry (B.J.) Mikeska,Jr., Clinton Mikeska and Jessie Mikeska.
