Jonathan Brett Lanier, 55, unexpectedly entered through the gates of heaven and into eternal rest on Saturday, May 17 while working in the yard he loved so much.

Brett was born Oct. 3, 1958, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He graduated from Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, and continued on to attend the University of North Texas and Saint Mary’s for his undergraduate education. He then attended the University of Houston where he obtained his Doctorate of Jurisprudence.

Brett took the Texas Bar Exam, passing it on the first attempt, and became a practicing attorney specializing in corporate law. He worked at Butler and Binion and went on to successfully establish his own law firm in Houston, Texas. He retired from practice and moved to Chappell Hill, arriving later in Bellville,.

He was a successful entrepreneur developing an upscale cleaning company and most recently he had decided to exit retirement and return to practicing law again.

He was a man of numerous talents, he was a dedicated, tender, and loving father, and he was an exceptional and faithful companion to his soul mate, Ann. Brett was an avid outdoorsman who thoroughly enjoyed fly fishing in New Mexico, hunting, and boating. Brett enjoyed all aspects of life and he always placed the needs of the family before his own, never questioning it. He appreciated the simplest of gestures with the most sincere gratitude. He enjoyed music, art, reading, and relaxing on the front porch. He also recently developed a passion for gardening and yard work, meticulously tending to his grass, plants, and flowers. Brett had a wide and diverse palette for foods of all cultures and traditions, but especially sushi, Mexican, and beans.

He is preceded in death by his father, Juan E. Lanier, and is survived by his mother, Jeanine Noble Roberts, his soul mate Ann Lanier, his cherished twins, Ann Michelle Brandon and John Paul Lanier, and their spouses.

A private ceremony with family was held prior to his cremation and a memorial service in celebration his life and in honor of his memory will be held at Saint John’s Lutheran Retreat Center on Oct. 3, 2014 in Bellville.

Brett’s final desire is to have his ashes released in a stream in New Mexico where he and his son spent many happy hours fly fishing, and where he vacationed with his family.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association on his behalf.
