Kendrick, Aletha Lee
Obituary
2023
Aletha Lee Kendrick, 80, left this life and entered into Glory on March 15, 2023, after a short, yet courageous battle with cancer.
Aletha was born October 31, 1942, to Carl and Marie Burk in Houston. She was baptized, raised, and confirmed in the Lutheran church. Aletha graduated from Cy-Fair High School, in Cypress, Tx in 1960 and went on to attend college at Texas Woman’s University in Denton and The University of Texas in Austin. She and Darrell met on a blind date at a Valentine’s dance and got engaged six months later. They were married at Concordia Lutheran Church in Houston on Leap Year, February 29, 1964. Their love and marriage have been an inspiration to all that know them. After college, she worked as a Legal Secretary for a well-known personal injury attorney Joe Jamail until the birth of her daughter in February 1967. It was right then and there that she knew she wanted to be a full-time stay-at-home mom and enjoy the blessings she was given. Four years later they were blessed with the birth of their son Ryan. Aletha was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Dickinson, TX since 1967. They lived and raised their children in San Leon, TX right on Galveston Bay where she loved to watch her husband and son fish, the children and their friends swim and play for countless hours and watch the most amazing sunsets from their pier. She blessed her husband, children, and her children’s friends with more love and support than anyone else in the world could. She had a passion for reading, painting, gardening, shopping on a “girls’ day” with her daughter, playing the piano, volunteering at her church, and volunteering at her children’s school when they were young. Aletha and Darrell also have a great love for the Texas Hill Country where they loved to spend as much time as possible at their various properties over the course of their marriage. They both enjoyed their nightly margaritas, sitting outside in the country, taking in the beauty, and listening to absolutely nothing. In recent years she was blessed to discover she had a biological half-sister and developed a beautiful relationship with her. Aletha is survived by the love of her life, her devoted husband of 59 years Darrell Kendrick of Bellville, TX, daughter Lisa Johnson, and fiancé Anthony Gast of Santa Fe, TX, grandson Ryan Johnson of Santa Fe, TX, biological sister Janet Nelson of Illinois, best friends Charlene Norvell of Bedias, TX, Margaret Frazier of Friendswood, TX and Bekki Lammert (cousin) of Austin, TX, the three girls that proudly call her their “Other Mother” Donna Catron Graham of Galveston, TX, Angie Chalk van der Meer of Villa De La Orotava, Canary Islands, Spain, Lana Blair of San Leon, TX and numerous cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her 12-year-old son Michael Ryan Kendrick, her parents Carl and Marie Burk, and her in-laws Nolte and Verbeline Kendrick. Aletha was a friend and “mother” to all that knew her. But she is most known for her kindness, never forgetting a birthday or anniversary. She always had a smile that could outshine any darkness and a kind word for all she met. There are no words for how much she will be missed by all who know her.
