Hattie J Kamas was born in Weimar on April 5, 1930 to parents Vinc (Jim) and Jenovefa Krecmer Cernoch. She was the youngest of 8 children all of whom preceded her in death. She grew up on a farm in Weimar and attended elementary school at Wildwood. She married Lawrence Winkler of Schulenburg in October of 1953. They started their married life in Weimar and moved to Rosenberg shortly thereafter. Both were employed with the Lamar Consolidated School District. Hattie started as a cook in the high school cafeteria and after earning her GED continued in a management position. Lawrence died in July of 1967 and Hattie continued to live alone in Rosenberg until she married Edwin Kamas on Feb. 14, 1975 and moved to Nelsonville. She lived there until his death in February, 1983. She then moved to Bellville and continued her career as a cafeteria manager at O’Bryant Elementary School until her retirement in 2000. Hattie was a faithful member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville, member of the Hospitality Committee, and Council of Catholic Women. Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church and the funeral Mass was at 10 Thursday, Oct. 30 at the church in Bellville. Burial was in St. Michael Cemetery in Weimar. Hattie enjoyed visiting with neighbors, friends and relatives and occasional gambling trips to Louisiana. Her biggest asset was love for family; her special day was Easter Sunday when she prepared a wonderful meal yearly for 39 years. Her greatest enjoyment was watching the little ones expression as she announced that she saw the Easter bunny’s tail as he left the eggs in the yard. After a short and courageous battle with cancer and other complications, Hattie passed away on Oct. 25 at 5:23 p.m. in Bryan. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends because she truly was a special lady. Hattie is survived by 2 sisters-in-law, 14 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
