Willie Holmes was born on July 13, 1918 in Austin County to the late Elijah and Katie Holmes. He was the first of four children born to this union. He grew up in Buckhorn and attended the Buckhorn community school. Willie, who was known as Rabbit, confessed his hope in Christ at an early age. He attended Samuel Chapel AME Church in the Buckhorn community. After the closing of the church, he became a faithful member of the Isaiah Community AME Church and he served under the leadership of Reverend Luther Shaw until his passing. On June 27, 1942 Rabbit enlisted into the United States Army. He served his country in World War II and was honorable discharged on Dec. 18, 1945. While serving his country, Rabbit received three medals: The EAME Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Rabbit met and married his longtime sweetheart, Elizabeth Curry. To this union, they were blessed with 12 children. Rabbit attended the Bellville Veterans School of Agriculture and Prairie View A&M University in the late forties and early fifties and he was a successful farmer of cotton, corn and hay for many years. He also worked as an electrician assistant. He retired from the City of Bellville Water Department after 20 years of service. During his tenure of life, he befriended many residents of Bellville and he became well known in this town. Rabbit is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two siblings, three sons, three grandsons and four great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Lorene Philpot of Houston, sister-in-law, Jessie Holmes, children; L.C, Willie, Jr. (Elizabeth) Gladys (Freely), Luscious, Alice (Edward), Elijah (Sallie), Alberta Lenel), Bobbie (Robert Turner, Sr.) and Charles (Gail), 43 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great grandchildren, family, friends and relatives. Funeral service was Saturday, July 20, 2013, noon at Bellville High School . Visitation was Friday, July 19, 2013, 5-8 p.m. at Miller-Josey Mortuary Interment was Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Buckhorn Cemetery Posted by Joy Neely |
