Nettie Ruth Gaft Stewart was born in Simonton, Aug. 9, l918, to George and Lydia (Grabow) Graf. She had one younger sister, Bernice Ida Graf. When Nettie Ruth was about five years old, the family moved to Orchard where her father had purchased land and farmed to support his family. She remained a resident of Orchard her entire life. Nettie Ruth attended school at Orchard and loved going to school. When it rained, and she couldn’t walk the two miles to school, she insisted that her father saddle old King, the horse, and take her to school. She was a very competitive student and did well in class work as well as on the volleyball team. She married James H. Stewart on Aug. 3, 1935 when she was 17-years-old. James was a farmer-rancher and Nettie Ruth was a homemaker, although she had several part time jobs. One as a bookkeeper at the Orchard Coop during cotton growing season. She also worked a short time at Texas Instruments in Houston . James and Nettie Ruth were blessed with two daughters, Doris and Joyce. Nettie Ruth was a lifelong member of the Orchard United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women’s group. She held many offices in the church and did much work to support it. Posted by Joy Neely |
