"I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet..." Revelation 1:10 Charles H. "Chuck" Hodges was called home by his Lord on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 at 5 p.m. at the age of 77. He was born June 11, 1926 in Bradley, Arkansas to parents Edward and Martha (Rodgers) Hodges. Charles and Miss Dorothy McCown were united in marriage on Feb. 19, 1949 in Conroe, Texas. With the exception of 15 years in Ridgecrest, California, they lived in or around Conroe, Texas until they moved to Bellville in 1979. Charles worked throughout his life as a truck driver, school custodian, and as a foreman for Ingersoll Rand until a near fatal fall in 1980 causing a severe brain injury forcing him to retire early and left him without a sense of taste or smell in addition to being color blind since birth. After he regained much of him memory and learned to drive again due to the patient teaching of his wife, his greatest joy was to serve his church by mowing the grass and serving as a custodian and general handyman. He also mowed the grass for church members, often refusing payment. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior when he was 29 years old. After that time he served the Lord as a deacon, church treasurer, Sunday School superintendent, youth worker, and by playing the guitar. He was a member of Ridgecrest Assembly of God in California and Woodland Park Assembly of God around the Conroe area prior to moving to Bellville. Before moving to Bellville, Chuck and Dorothy prayed for an Assembly of God Church to begin in the area so that their daughter Martha and her family would have an Assembly of God Church to attend. Upon learning of Rev. Clyde Drake's desire to begin an Assembly of God Church in Sealy, Texas, Chuck and Dorothy felt God impressing them to support that work and later moved to Bellville to join in the work of establishing the new church. They joined Sealy Assembly of God, now known as Christian City Fellowship, while services were still held in the landmark building in the downtown area and worked diligently to complete the building at 1140 Meyer Street. Chuck was appointed as the church's first treasurer and also served as a deacon and guitarist. He faithfully attend that church until his death. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Hodges of Bellville, daughter Martha Elshick and husband Jesse of Bellville; son Larry Hodges and wife Carla of Sweeny; grandchildren Marie Myers, David L. Hoff, Charles W. Hoff, Donica Manak, Shan Hodges, Amy King, Wade Hodges and Erin Hodges; great grandchildren, Bonnie, Zain, Ryan, Dylan, Nichalos, Taryn, Madison, Nichalos, and Braden, Johnny and Herman and sisters, Jessie, Mildred and Opal. When asked how he was, Chuck would say, "I'm still breathing" and his family is rejoicing that he is in heaven breathing the pure air, tasting and smelling without problem, seeing the brilliant colors of God's presence and is praising with a clear and completely healed mind. Funeral services were under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapel, Sealy, Texas. |
