Maler, Don Ted (1953-2023)
Maler, Don Ted
Obituary
2023
Don Ted Maler was a loving father, husband, step-grandfather, son, brother, and friend to the Waller County community. He left this world unexpectedly on February 19, 2023, at 69 years & 10 months of age. Don will be deeply missed.

Don was born to Ted and Bernice (Trettin) Maler on April 29, 1953, in Sealy, TX. A graduate of Royal High School, in his youth, Don played tennis & basketball and was active in the Fighting Falcon band as a percussionist. He was also a true lover of the arts, both a poet and a performer. Post-graduation, Don became a registered public land surveyor (RPLS) for the state of Texas. He had a prolific decade-long career for the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). Later, he successfully formed his own surveying company to better serve his local community. In his work, Don advocated for and advised the local underdog; he used his land expertise to go ‘above and beyond’ for anyone he encountered. Don continued working tirelessly as an RPLS his entire life, serving Waller, Ft. Bend, and Harris counties until his untimely passing.

Don adored spending time with his dogs while grilling for his family; his 'top secret' marinades were legendary. He was intensely connected to nature and most at peace when working outdoors, especially on his farm. Don was also a skilled fisherman and fly-tier, a talented drummer and classic rock enthusiast, a nostalgic storyteller, and an old-time Western film buff. Don was deeply committed to protecting and providing for his family; he was trustworthy, steadfast, and hardworking.

Yet, beyond loving his farm and survey work, Don had a sensitive and humorous side to his personality that only those closest to him throughout his life had the privilege of knowing and loving. Don taught his daughters to love and respect the Earth and further, to always value knowledge above all other material possessions. Those who were lucky enough to purposely get lost with Don when he 'took a tipsy' on a backcountry road know what a contemplative thinker he was. Don's warm presence—in a colorful Hawaiian-print shirt with a prank up his sleeve—can never be forgotten by those who truly loved him.

Don is survived by his former wife of 45 years, Brigitte (Braentner) Maler; daughter: Amber Nicolette Maler; step-daughter: Ginger Pardo; former mother-in-law: Margot Braentner; sister: Seleta Maler; brother: Gary Maler; step-grandchildren: Kaylie Brown, Alyssa Morris, Daryl Morris, Devon Morris.
