Service for Mrs. Myrtle Lee Singleton was Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, noon at Historic Allen Chapel A. M. E. Church in Bellville, Texas. The service was conducted by Reverend Dr. William Quickley. Myrtle Lee Singleton was born in Nelsonville on June 3, 1909 to the late Simon and Susie Bonner Bouldin. She attended public school in Bleiblerville and Sealy. At an early age, Myrtle confessed her hope in Christ and united with the Salem Church and later with the Historic Allen AME Church in Bellville, Texas. She became a dedicated member at Historic Allen and was a faithful servant for over 59 years. Myrtle was an “remeritus” of the Communion Stewardess Board. She looked forward to the first Sunday of each month so she could prepare the altar for the communion service and she would make sure that each pleat of the communion skirt was set perfectly in its rightful place. Myrtle would walk to church every Sunday. She would not accept rides from Hattie Browning, Pat Mosley, Dion McDade and other members of the church and the community. Myrtle was also known for her hats that she wore to church. Myrtle was always kind and giving. She help raised Earl Jones as he was growing up. Myrtle was a very independent woman who was able to take care of herself up until she was 104 years old. She was an avid gardener and she would rake and chop every day until 10 a.m. Myrtle loved to cook her famous holiday meals, especially her desserts; “the custard cream egg pie, chocolate cake and the German chocolate cake.” On March 20, 1929, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Eddie Singleton. They were married for 54 years. To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Eddie Faye Lewis. Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Eddie Faye Lewis and son-in-law, Jimmie Earl Lewis, Sr., Prairie View, a granddaughter, Dr. Tameka Lewis-Baker (Paul) Sunnyvale, and a grandson Dr. Jimmie Earl Lewis (Dr Talitha), Katy, six great-great grandchildren, Jimmie III, Jordon, Joshua and Justin Lewis, Paul Douglas Baker and Talani Baker, two nephews, Melvin Charles Randle, Bellville and Burl Garnet, Seattle, Washington, and two nieces, Mrs. Mary Frances Chappell and Mrs. Ora Nell Jackson, Houston; a very special niece, Carla Faye Lewis (Plunnie) and a special nephew, Earl Jones.
