January 1956 F.Zander victim of Drowning The body of Fritz H. Zander, 66, was found in the Charpiot lake on the Buckhorn highway shortly after noon Saturday, January 7. A verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned by Justice R.B. Wehring, who held the inquest. Members of the Bellville Volunteer fire department rescue squad under the direction of Asst. Chief W.A. Rudloff, rushed to the scene as soon as word of the tragedy reached Bellville. Serving with Chief Rudloff were Charles A. Riniker, Clifton Ueckert and Vernon Schneider. They were unable, however, to save the victim. A widely known Austin county farmer, Mr. Zander was born in the Ives Creek community June 9, 1889, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Zander. He attended school in that area, and on Sept. 28, 1910, was married to Miss Ida Scholtz, at Bellville. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Bellville and of the local Sons of Hermann lodge. Funeral services were held at the Pete E. Etlinger funeral home chapel in Bellville at 3:30 p.m. Monday, January 9, the Rev. A.J. Mohr officiating. Interment was at Pilgrim's Rest, and pallbearers were George Bartay, Leslie Brugger and Herbert, Edmund, Herman and Harry Zander. Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. W.H. Schomburg of Bellville and Mrs. Emil H. Frank, Jr. of LaMarque; a son, Fred Zander of Houston; five sisters, Mrs. J.J. Erks of York, Nebraska, Mrs. Henry Brugger and Mrs. Annie Zander of Bellville, Mrs. Marie Bartay of Longview, and Mrs. Minnie Dahse of Waller; a brother, Herman Zander of Bellville; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
