The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, March 28, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Garrett was born on Aug. 12, 1930 in Austin County to Blanche (Sherrod) Garrett and passed away peacefully on March 27, 2014 in Conroe. Allen was raised in Bellville (Raccoon Bend) and went on to join the USMC. He fought with distinction with the First Marine Division at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in a decisive battle of the Korean War. Surprised and surrounded by 67,000 Chinese troops, Mr. Garrett was one of the 30,000 men known as the “Chosin Few,” who fought in freezing weather in December of 1950 to break-out of the encirclement, and drive back the Chinese. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in March of 1953, and spent his career traveling the world working in the oil industry for H.L. Hunt’s Penrod Oil Co. On June 14, 1952, he married the love of his life, Dorothy in Groceville, Texas. They were married for 63 years. She passed away in November of 2013. Allen was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy and his sister, Lucille Garrett Nelson. He is survived by his son, Richard “Ricky” A. Garrett and his wife, Crystal and his dear grandsons, Magnus and Milam Garrett; many other relatives and friends also survive. Special thanks to his very special caretaker, Flo Taylor, for all her devotion, patience and love. Posted by Joy Neely |
