Obituary

WILMA RUTH GENTRY was born August 29, 1922 in Anson, Jones County, Texas to Wilson and Carrie Gentry. She was the thirteenth child born to this union. She grew up in Pattison, Sunnyside and San Felipe, Texas. At the age of eighteen she moved to Houston, Texas. “Aunt Wilma” lived in what was known as Sixth Ward for many years and later moved to the west end area in Houston. She was well known by many throughout the community. At family gatherings Aunt Wilma was the welcoming committee and the historian. She welcomed family members and friends in her home with a smile, a story and sometimes a song. She loved the Gentry family and lived life with great enthusiasm and joy.
Even though Aunt Wilma did not give birth to any children, she became a mother and grand-mother to many. She was affectionately called mama, grandma and aunt mama. She was added to the church of The Living God Pillar And Ground Of The Truth Temple #18 where she sang in the choir. Later in life she studied with the Jehovah Witness until her health failed. Aunt Wilma is preceded in death by her parents, her partner of twenty years Mr. L.C. Gaines, and six sisters and six brothers. Leaving to cherish her memory is Mr. Byron L. Perry (Deidre) whom she raised from infancy, his three daughters London, Trinity and Trinajah, several nieces, nephews and friends who loved her dearly. She will be truly missed. |
