Leona Peschel FLentge was born on August 6, 1920 to Willie & Emilie (Hegemeyer) Peschel in Star Hill Community. She was baptized on November 21, 1920 and confirmed on April 5, 1936 at St. John Lutheran Church of Bellville. Leona married Alvin John Flentge on November 25, 1937 also at St. John Lutheran Church, Bellville. Leona was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who spent her life doing for her family. She worked in her garden every day raising all kinds of vegetables and fruits. She canned her produce, made jams and jellies, and baked delicious bread, cakes, pies and cookies to share with her family. For holidays she made her delicious sugar cookies frosted with egg white frosting and covered with sprinkles or pecans. She was also known for her famous Angel Food Cake that she decorated with pineapple slices and cherries. She knew all of her children and grandchildren’s favorite dishes and baked goods and always had those items prepared for the family gatherings. Another favorite of all the grandchildren were her strawberries which she covered with fresh cream and sugar. She also loved flowers and had beautiful flowers of many colors growing everywhere. In the spring we would be blessed with hundreds of butterflies because of those flowers. Leona was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and of the Rachel Circle. She was an inspiration to all with her unfailing faith in God. She lived by example going to church every Sunday and with her daily reading of her Bible. She would read aloud to her children while they doing their chores after dinner. She always had a smile and kind word for everyone she met. She truly believed in the saying “If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all” and shared that with everyone daily. Every day she made decisions based on what would Jesus want her do to and how would it glorify his name. She also loved singing her hymns while working. Leona went home to be with her Father in heaven on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.
