Herbert Buntzel Jr., passed away unexpectedly Dec. 21, 2009 in Sugar Land. Herb was born July 9, 1930 in Brenham to Juanita Mae (Picone) and Herbert Buntzel, and was their only child. He was preceded in death by his father Herbert "Pop" Buntzel.
Herb's family history is deeply rooted in Washington and Austin County. His family arrived in the U.S. from Germany in the 1840s, and were respected bankers, lawmen, furniture makers, metal smiths, entrepreneurs, ranchers and community leaders. Herb grew up in Brenham and graduated from Brenham High School and later attended University of Houston. Growing up, he enjoyed helping his father restore Ford Model Ts, making model airplanes, boating and fishing. Herb was a master carpenter, a trait he inherited from his great-great grandfather, Fredrich, who was a listed famous early furniture maker in Texas. Herb was an accomplished artist working in pen, oils and wood. Herb was known as one of the "Best BBQers in Texas" having been taught the art by his father who was also the Fire Chief of Brenham. He developed a love of flying when he restored an old bi-plane in Brenham and learned to fly. His love of flying and love of country lead to him to volunteer for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War where he was stationed at Chanute Airfield in Illinois and Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. Herb and Joyce Elaine Lorenz, also from Brenham, were married during his service years and began their family. Herb became an international traveler when working for several engineering companies including Fluor Corporation, Rockwell International and Puffer Sweiven. Later, he co-founded VARCO and Dixon Engineering. He was well known for instrumentation design, flow control, combustion design, his ability to troubleshoot and working with NASA. In his later years, he was known for his rescue and rehabilitation of many dogs. His love of his own dogs was well-known and he could often be seen riding his four-wheeler, with four or five dogs racing ahead or beside him. Herb is survived by his mother, Juanita Conlan of Brenham; his wife of 30 years Wanda Buntzel of Bellville; his children, Gaile Daniels, Karen Bradshaw and husband John, and Mark Buntzel all of Houston; and stepchildren Shawn Rosa of Bellville, and Chris Strickland and wife Janet of Sugar Land. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dawn Mabray, Sean Daniels and wife Robin, Raegen Legenzoff, Aaron Rosa and wife Anna, Amber Rosa and Korina Balderas; great-grandchildren, Zachary Daniels, Collan Daniels, Joslyn Legenzoff, Ireland Daniels, and Madelyn Todd; and great-great granddaughter, Ariel Bradshaw; and six step siblings of the Conlan family. Memorial services will be held Brenham Memorial Chapel, Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. located at 2300 Stringer Street, Brenham, TX 77833.
