John Collins was mortally wounded in a cattle stampede accident. George H. Bush, John's cousin, was with him when it happened. George promised the dying man that his young wife, Tallie, and his infant daughter Jonnie would be taken care of. John Collins died at the age of only 22 years and 5 months. George Bush kept his promise and married Tallie in January 1875.
