Estabel Dawson Carpenter, 89, of Kerrville passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Hilltop Village Nursing Center. Graveside services were held 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at the Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville with longtime family friend, Bill Gibbs officiating. Interment followed in the family plot. Mrs. Carpenter was born in Homer, La. on Aug. 30, 1924 to Aubin and Bernice Coleman Dawson. She earned her B.S. degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1944. After graduation she became a caseworker at the Children’s Service Bureau in Shreveport, La. She retired in 1988 after 28 years of teaching and enriching children’s lives in Bellville, Victoria, Bloomington, Katy and Palestine public schools. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by Malcolm L. Carpenter, Sr., her husband of 48 years in 1994; her son, Malcolm L. Carpenter, Jr., in 1990; and one grandson, Drew A. Slater, in 2008. Survivors include her daughter, Amy C. Slater and husband Jeff of Alpine, Texas; one grandson, Lee M. Slater and his wife Kim of New Braunfels; and her sister, Mary Aubyn Dawson, of Washington State.
