Franklin Marion Cantrell, Jr. died Wednesday, the 29th of January 2014 in Houston, Texas at the age of 89. He was born on the 19th of September 1924 in Etowah, Tennessee to Franklin M. Cantrell, Sr. and Mae M. Hale. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy C. Dender, and two brothers, Robert W. Cantrell and Washington H. Cantrell. He was married to the love of his life for 59 years to Doris P. Cantrell. He had four children, Lee C. Williams, Franklin M. Cantrell III, Gregory T. Cantrell and Elizabeth J. Cantrell. Franklin M. Cantrell, Jr. stood for the word honor. His integrity was his bond. He never knew a stranger. In fact, if Frank met you once, he would have known your name and things about your life for eternity. His laugh was contagious. He would get tickled, and the whole room would fill with laughter. If you ever needed anything, he was always first to lend a helping hand. Franklin always wanted to know what he could do for you. And…most importantly, he never said an unkind word about anyone. His family and friends all share such fond memories. Frank lived and loved life. He was a great friend, father, and husband. He was known as Franklin, Frank, and Papa Frank to his grandchildren. He is; and will always, be truly missed. After serving in WWII as an amphibian engineer he graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He graduated number one in the engineering department and 3rd in the class of 1948. He belonged to the honorary fraternities of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. In addition he was a member of the ATO fraternity. After graduating, Franklin followed in his father’s footsteps in the oil and gas industry. He was Vice-President of East Tennessee Natural Gas in Knoxville, Tennessee, which was later acquired by Tenneco. In 1965, Franklin joined Mississippi River Transmission in St. Louis, Missouri as Executive Vice President. He later moved to Houston, Texas and joined Walter Fawcett and Bill Witmer as a partner in Energy Consultants Inc. Along with Energy Consultants, Franklin served as Chairman of the Board of Sabine Gas Transmission Company. Sabine was formed to build and operate a salt dome storage facility on what was one of the most notable oil & Gas wildcat fields “Spindletop” near Beaumont, Texas. He and his family joined St. Phillip Presbyterian Church in 1968 where he served as a deacon and elder. He was also a member of Lochinvar Golf Club, The Houston Club, and the Lions Club. Franklin was a an Eagle Scout and scout leader at troop 622 at St Philip. Both his boys followed in his footsteps attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Grandchildren include Franklin IV, Griffin, Abigail, April, Amy, Ashley, Taylor, Kennedy and Grant. Services are to be held at St. Phillip Presbyterian Church on Friday February 7th (4807 San Felipe Houston, Texas 77056) at 3:00 p.m .
