Obituary
1954
Freeport Facts, Freeport, Texas, October 27, 1954:

Willie Franklin Thompson, 23-year-old South Houston man, died at 1:55 a.m. Wednesday morning in Dow Hospital after his motorcycle had gone out of control near the intersection of 288 and FM 1605. Thompson, an oilfield worker from South Houston, suffered multiple skull fractures and lacerations when the cycle evidently hit the esplanade in the center of the road near the intersection. The accident occurred at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputy Sheriff Billy McCoy, who investigated the wreck, said Thompson was found lying on the shoulder of the road and the motorcycle was found burning some 100 yards further down the highway. McCoy said Thompson probably hit the raised curbing at the point where 288 becomes a four-lane highway just south of the Lake Jackson cut-off intersection.

Rushed to Dow Hospital, Thompson died some two hours later despite the effort of two doctors attending him. "He never regained consciousness," McCoy said.
