Obituary
2024
Raymond John Marek Sr. (95), formerly of East Bernard TX, entered the fullness of life peacefully on April 14, 2024, at his apartment in Sodalis Senior Living of Wharton. His children, relatives and friends all mourn his death; but believe he now rejoices in God's reign.

Raymond was born in 1928 in Wallis, TX to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marek. For a portion of his childhood, he also lived with his relatives Mr. & Mrs. John Klecka of Wallis. Raymond graduated from Wallis High School, and it was there that he met the love of his life: Lillian Marek. Raymond and Lillian were married in 1949 and lived in Wallis before they moved to East Bernard, where they resided for 68 years. Raymond and Lillian celebrated 71 years of marriage until Lillian's death in 2020. Together the couple raised 10 children: Larry Marek (Karla, deceased), Paulette Dobias (Dennis, deceased), Maria Marek, Debbie Van Pelt (Michael), Patrick Marek, Fr. Ray John Marek, OMI, Maureen Marek, Daniel Marek (Roxane), Josette Pesek (Dwayne), and Shelly Peters (Steve). He rejoiced in 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Raymond had 6 siblings: Sidney, Adolph, Bernard Sr., Johnnie, Edward, and Frantisek. Only his brother Edward survives him. Throughout Raymond and Lillian’s lives, they had a very close relationship with Lillian’s brother Eugene (also deceased). Raymond will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but we celebrate his life and accomplishments.

“Mr. Ray” as he was affectionately known throughout his career and retirement, enjoyed dancing polkas and waltzes at club dances and wedding celebrations with Lillian. He especially loved to fish, and Mr. Ray and Lillian would frequently load all the kids in the car and spent enjoyable days fishing at Matagorda. Never one for idle time, Mr. Ray was always busy raising cows at his local farm, performing handyman chores around the house, and especially enjoyed harvesting crops from his garden and pear trees which were his pride and joy.

Mr. Ray devoted his efforts to his wife, children, extended family and relatives. Early in his career, he worked at the bank in Wallis. After moving to East Bernard, Raymond and Lillian owned Marek’s Super Market for 25 years. Afterward, he also worked in the Wharton County Tax Office for 16 years. Mr. Ray was a long-time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and also a member of the East Bernard Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He previously served as Grand Knight of that organization and was recently honored for his service during his adult lifetime. He was also a 75+ year member of the KJT (Czech Catholic Union of Texas).

Visitation will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard on April 18th from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Rosary at 6:30 PM. The Funeral Mass is at Holy Cross on April 19th at 10:00 A.M.; burial following at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Brian Cunningham, Matthew Dobias, Ryan Pesek, Braden Riha, Rubin Rivera, Scott Wharton, Marcus Williams, and Jeremy Zamzow. Honorary Pallbearers are all Raymond’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchild.

The family expresses special appreciation to the caregivers from Sodalis Wharton and Houston Hospice for their attention and devotion to Raymond. We also are very grateful to Mrs. Versa Jones who spent nights caring for him during his recent illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Holy Cross Vocation Scholarship Fund (P.O. Box 1325, East Bernard, TX 77435) or the Vocation Fund for the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (327 Oblate Drive, San Antonio, TX 78216). Condolences may be posted at www.knesekfuneralhome.com.
