Biography
Born June 6, 1925 in Bellville, Texas, Milton was the youngest son of Louis A. and Adelheidt Reichardt Machemehl. His Great Grandfather John and Grandfather Paul Machemehl's families were early settlers of Austin County. Milton went to be with the Lord on Sunday May 16, 2010. Milton, known to many as "Shallow Water" or "Mac", Attended Bellville schools where he graduated in the class of 1942. He attended Blinn College before entering military service, where he served in the Navy Air Corps from September 1943 to March 1946. Always interested in sports and outdoor activities, Milton was named "All-around Athletic" in high-school, and played basketball with NAS Corpus Christi where they became the top service team in the nation with a 26-2 record for the 1945-46 season. Milton received three basketball scholarship offers and chose to attend Texas A&M College where he graduated with a Business Degree. Milton Machemehl began work for U.S. Steel, Oilwell Supply Division in 1949, where he quickly picked up the nickname "Mac." He worked for 341/2 years before retiring as Area Manager of Stores for the Gulf Coast. It was also in 1949 that he married Velma Hand from Hempstead. With deep roots in Austin County, Milton boasted that he "had to go across the river to keep from marrying kinfolks." They were married for nearly 50 years before Velma passed away in January 1999. Milton and Velma were always active in the various churches where they lived; Calder Baptist, Beaumont; Tallowood Baptist, Houston; and First Baptist, Bellville. He was also active in several organizations including most recently the American Legion, Bellville Post. Always with a joke or something uplifting to say, he brought smiles to those close by. Milton made friends everywhere, remembering not just acquaintances' names, but also where they worked, and who their family was. He readily "assigned" a nickname to anyone that "needed" one. An avid black coffee drinker, he met friends for coffee and chatter each morning for over 20 years with a group he helped name the "Langes#2 Honorary Pallbearers." He started each day out with a funny saying or joke, and believed everyone should take a humor break each day. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Milton to the First Baptist Church of Bellville, Bellville Hospital Foundation, or American Legion Post 115.
