Verna Lois Schulte Deere (January 14, 1924 – August 31, 2022) was born the daughter of Josie E. and Otto W. Schulte in Brenham, Texas. She was baptized in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brenham. After graduating from Brenham High School, she attended business college in Houston where she first went to work for Houston National Bank. Two years later, she married Charles W. Deere on June 14th, 1944 in Bellville. After his tour in the U.S. Navy, they stayed in Bellville where Verna Lois worked for Bellville High School before taking her "long-term job" with Texas Southeastern Gas Company, retiring after 24 years of service there. Together they had 2 children, Craig Douglas and Charlotte Dianne.
Verna Lois enjoyed serving in the local community. After serving 25 years with the American Cancer Society as Memorial Chairperson, she retired in 2010. She was also a member of the Bellville Town & Country Garden Club, serving as Publicity Manager and Club Scrapbook Manager. Other services were with the Ruth Circle at the St. John Lutheran Church, the Exxon Mobil Annuitant Club as Deeds Chairman for 10 years, and the Bluebonnet Chapter of the German Society. Additionally, she was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary as Cancer Chairman and the Bellville General Hospital Auxiliary. In addition, she spent many enjoyable years volunteering at the New 2 U Resale Shop, with all profits going to Bellville General Hospital. Being an Aggie fan, she was also an active member of the "Aggie Mom's Club," as was appropriate at the time. She was extremely honored and proud to be selected Lion's Club "Citizen of the Year" for 2009. This was truly an outstanding moment in her life that she cherished. In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing, crafting, traveling, and especially dancing! She dearly loved her family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many, many great friends in Bellville and surrounding areas. Survivors include her son, Craig Deere of Austin, TX, and his best friend, Diana DiNitto; grandsons, Stephen Loesch of Temple, TX, Shawn Loesch and wife, Kristi, of Round Rock, TX, Jason Deere and Lisa of Houston, TX, and Brandon Deere and Kristen of Allen, TX. Great-grandchildren include Hunter and Hailey Loesch, and Trey Loesch. Nieces include Connie Hill of Houston and Cindy Kubicek and her husband, Kenny, of East Bernard, and numerous other wonderful friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles W. Deere in 1979; her brother, Otto J. Schulte in 2007; her loving daughter, Charlotte D. Deere in 2010; also her special friend, Leroy Arndt in 1992. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 520 N.
