Charles Richard Stone, 69, was born on December 29, 1947, in Hope, Arkansas, and died August 12, 2017, in Houston, Texas. He is predeceased by his parents, Homer and Era Mae Stone, and grandparents, Zach and Bessie Stone, and Othel and Mae Lively. He graduated from Hope High School in 1965, received a Bachelor of Music Education from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, in 1969, and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the US Army. He received a Master’s degree in clarinet performance from the University of Iowa (Iowa City) in 1971.
He was attracted to music at a young age, first learning saxophone and playing in church until he could buy his first clarinet. He was driven to excel in musicianship, playing as an accomplished clarinetist and saxophonist through much of his life. He was a charter member of the Houston Concert Band. While at Henderson State, he met and married Marietta Bell of Crossett, AR. Marietta played piano accompaniment on his senior clarinet recital and later supported his independent music teaching business both behind the scenes and as an accompanist. Richard was a band director in public schools in Iowa and Texas for a few years, followed by an insurance career of 17 years in Houston, Texas. He then started his own instrumental music teaching business in Houston area private schools, culminating in 18 years at St. Laurence Catholic School. Mr. Stone is well loved by so many students former students, and parents. At home we call him “Mr. Music.” With his wife, Marietta, Richard learned to square dance with the Hey Lollies square dance club in 2010. The Lollies and their square dance caller call it “friendship in motion.” He will be missed also by this wonderful community of square dancers. The St. Laurence, Lollies, and St. Francis de Sales communities were a great support to Richard and his family through his illness. Richard received the sacraments of Baptism, first Communion, and Confirmation at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on Easter Vigil 1986. He and Marietta found the Catholic Church through a Marriage Encounter weekend. Due to his intense personal study, he was a wealth of Christian faith history, American and World history, and Stone and Lively family genealogy. “Encyclopedia Stone” loved to share this with anyone who would listen. He enjoyed telling stories and hearing good ones, especially funny stories. His grandchildren knew him as the best biscuit maker and grilled cheese maker in the world and a loving Papa who swapped jokes with them and imparted knowledge to them. Richard is survived by his wife, Marietta; children, Marcus Stone and wife, Karen; David Stone and wife, Kristine; and Robin Stone; grandchildren, Hannah, Micah, Jeremiah, JohnMark, Ava, and Andrew Stone. Richard fondly remembers years of Stone family reunions with his numerous first cousins. |
