Koeppen, Irvin Lee "Sonny"
Obituary
2017
Irvin L. "Sonny" Koeppen, 91, of Sealy passed away on January 14, 2017.

Sonny was born on December 13, 1925 in Houston to Adolph and Ella (Pless) Koeppen. He was raised in Houston and graduated from Milby High School in 1944. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he sustained frozen feet. He spent four months in a hospital in England. After recuperating, he returned to his unit.

While in the service, his family moved to Sealy to build and operate Koeppen's Café and Tourist Courts. After helping the family, he worked for Santa Fe Railroad and later WKM in Missouri City. He retired in 1984.

He was of Lutheran faith and was previously a member of the Sealy American Legion, Sealy VFW, The Supper Club and Camping Club, the Sealy Fire Dept., Millheim Verein, Peters Gun Club, and the Firemen's Bowling Team.

Sonny dearly loved his family and spending time outdoors. He spent many hours hunting, fishing, playing card games and dominoes, barbecuing, and 4-wheeling with family and friends at the camp house in Cat Spring. He especially enjoyed the 26 years in which he had a year round lease in the Hill Country.

Sonny also loved building things and woodworking in his shop. Shortly after being married, he made various items for his wife as well as birdhouses and other interesting things. All the ladies in his family have quilt racks and treasure boxes he made from cedar boards from the Cat Spring farm.

He was always willing to help out family, friends, or neighbors if they needed a helping hand or something repaired, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bessie, sister Gladys Evans and husband Harvey, sister Edna Krupala and husband Willie, son-in-law Grover James, and niece Kay Krupala Dorsey.

He is survived by his son Lloyd Koeppen and wife Judith, daughter Nancy James; grandchildren Mark Koeppen and wife Stephanie, Brenda Hiatt and husband Shawn, April James, Kristina Birchfield and John, and Jacob James and wife Charity; great-grandchildren James Gauss and Chance Hilburn, Jared and Kevin Koeppen, Zachary and Jake Hiatt, Sabrina and Tyler Paben and Jocelyn Birchfield, and Addison and Wyatt James.

Pallbearers for the services included: Mark Koeppen, Shawn Hiatt, Jacob James, James Gauss, David Hintz, and Russell Krupala.
