Gene Alton Remmert, 84, of Sealy, Texas, went to his heavenly home in the morning on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Gene graduated from Sealy High School in 1954 where he was elected as senior class president, received an American Legion Citizenship Award, sang in the choir, and was on the football, baseball, and track teams. After graduating, he attended Blinn College where he was a bass soloist in the choir and was voted runner up to Mr. Buccaneer in 1956.
Gene honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956–1958. He completed basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado where he was named top trainee of his Company. He was stationed for 18 months in Germany with the 12th Combat Engineer Battalion, and was selected to attend the US Army Engineer School for Mines and Demolitions Warfare. A dedicated student, he finished as the top graduate and later taught classes back at Battalion. Upon returning home, Gene worked at Cameron Iron Works in Houston and Cypress for 35 years, between 1958–1992. While at Cameron, Gene was a hard, loyal worker who ascended the company ladder. As the superintendent of Manufacturing: Ingot and Bar Products, he was involved in projects that manufactured the materials for such devices as the Titan IIIC solid fuel tanks for the moon shot, the Apollo 13 oxygen system, and the Trieste Recovery Module for the lost Trident nuclear submarine. And as the manager of Industrial Engineering: Ingot, Bar, and Pipe, he developed engineering database computer programs for cost development. After Cameron shut down its melting operations in 1986, Gene moved to a new role in procurement. He loved and was enthusiastically involved in his hometown community where he always kept busy. He served on the county school board for four years, was very involved at Trinity Lutheran, holding various positions over the years, and was president of several local institutions, including the Sealy JC Chapter at the time that Levine City Park was developed, Sealy Little League when the Peewee and Minor League programs were developed, and, as a Brangus farmer and breeder, was also President of the Texas Bluebonnet Brangus Association. A mindful and skilled Brangus breeder, he was one of the five Brangus breeders who developed the Angus Plus Breed that is now known as Ultra Blacks. In 1983, he bred and raised the International Brangus Futurity Grand Champion Bull, BG Vaquero (or, as he called him, Bubba). Gene also went on to win the 1985 Outstanding Conservation Rancher Award. He was a board member of the Austin County Fair for eight years, and served for two years as the Livestock Superintendent. In addition to all of this, he was a member of the Sealy Volunteer Fire Department for over ten years, and could be found, on many mornings sharing coffee with close friends at the Truck Stop. Gene and Betty, his wife of 62 years, built their home and farm together in Sealy in 1973 where he achieved all of his childhood ambitions: to raise good cattle, good grass, and good hay, and to marry a wonderful, loving Christian wife, and raise a family. Gene was a strong and loving Christian husband, father, and grandfather who touched the lives of many, whether through his singing in the church choir, his service to his community, or his storytelling. He is survived and remembered lovingly by his wife, Betty; his children, Clint and Tammy; and his five grandchildren. We have too many happy, cherished memories with our Papa to list them all here. A few we all share are afternoons riding on his lap in the tractor, fetching him cold beers from the fridge, and watching storms roll in with him from the garage. We may have known just how to press his buttons, but it was always out of love. And, of course, Papa was a good sport. He taught us how to have big hearts, serve God, love our families, work hard, and cherish all the good we have on Earth. We'll carry him with us for the rest of our lives, and will always keep telling his stories. We love you, Papa. Love, your tootlehanses: Trent, Hannah, Garrett, Sam, and Nicole. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, 2020, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 402 Atchison St., Sealy, TX. A funeral service will be held at the church at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 12, 2020. Burial will be in Sealy Cemetery. Due to Covid regulations, masks and social distancing will be required. |
