Shunka, Jodie
Obituary
2019
Jodie Shunka, beloved father and grandpa, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the age of 85. Born February 28, 1934 in New Ulm, Texas he was the son of Joe and Edith Shunka. Jodie served in Korea in the US Army. He met and married his wife Verdine Peschel in Bellville, Texas in 1960. They moved to Houston in 1963 to their forever home in Shepherd Forest and raised their family. Before retiring, Jodie was a machinist for Dresser Measurements for more than 25 years. He was good with his hands and could fabricate anything out of metal. Jodie loved deer hunting and went as often as he could. He talked with enthusiasm about his mounted trophies and knew where he shot each one. He spent as much time as possible outdoors and took his family to “the country” every weekend to work on his land, hunt, and visit with family and friends. He grew a large garden of vegetables and often had the back of his truck filled with water melons and bags of tomatoes on the way home. He continued to enjoy these activities and mow with his tractor well into his early 80’s. Jodie was never idle and worked hard all his life even mowing lawns after retirement until age 82 or so. Even in his last few years he spent most of his time outside on the porch watching the neighborhood birds in his feeder or the squirrels stealing his pecans. Jodie is survived by his children Troy Shunka and his wife Ginger, Bryan Shunka, & Sheri Huebner and her husband Brandon; grandchildren Christopher Shunka, Kyle Shunka, Hunter Shunka, Benjamin Huebner and Camden Huebner; and his sister Sugar Mae Gregor. Jodie is preceded in death by his wife, Verdine Peschel and his brother, Elgin Shunka. The family will greet friends at the viewing between 11:00 and 1:00 on Monday, September 16 at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery on Antione near I-10.
