Lydia "Irene" Karwick, Houston, TX, formerly Portage, Indiana, age 72, of Bellville, TX, born March 16, 1933 in Chester, Illinois, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2005 at Memorial City Hospital, Houston, Texas. She was the daughter of Raymond Herschbach and Lydia Gerlach.

Irene graduated from Highland High School, Highland, Illinois in 1951. She married Maynard Clayton on November 17, 1951 in Highland and had 8 children. They lived in Illinois for a short time and relocated to Gary, Indiana seeking work at the Gary steel mills. They moved to Portage where they resided for many years with their children. Irene was involved in many activities throughout her life, keeping very busy raising 7 children, working and volunteering. She was a substitute teacher, secretary, Realtor, Tupperware Sales Associate, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader and enjoyed furthering her education. She worked in many fields over the years but was most rewarded from her positions as secretary to the Chief Ranger and as a Lands Acquisition Officer for the National Park Service in Chesterton, Indiana for over 25 years.

She was remarried on May 3, 1980 to Donald Karwick in Michigan City, Indiana where they resided for many years until after they both retired. They relocated in 1996 to Bellville, Texas where they have lived happily enjoying the warm weather and retirement. She loved to Polka and spent many years dancing with her loving husband. She enjoyed being a member of the Bellville Hospital Auxiliary, the American Legion, the VFW, AARP, Professional Business Women's Association, and attended Garden Club meetings as well as many other activities when she was able.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Lydia Herschbach; her brother, David Herschbach; and a daughter, Kathleen Clayton. She is survived by her husband, Donald Karwick; 3 sons, Gary Clayton of Silverlakes, IN, Randy Clayton of Salyersville, KY, David Clayton of Chesterton, IN; and 4 daughters, Laurie Lanko of Las Vegas, NV, Patricia Montgomery of Salyersville, KY, Angela Franks of Bellville, TX, and Marjorie BruBaker of Portage, IN. She also has 10 siblings, Dorothy Koopman, Delores Janey, Frances Wegner, Raymond Herschbach, Thelma Szymcek, Marjorie Becker, Albert Herschbach, James Herschbach, Donna Grim and Richard Herschbach, all of IL. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren, Cathleen Clayton, Venessa Clayton, Michael Clayton, Christopher Clayton, Danny Clayton, Victoria Lanko, Tashia Campbell, Renee Edwards, Brandy Montgomery, Matthew Franks, Brian Franks, Sonya BruBaker, Dennis Brubaker, Michael Clayton, David Clayton, Charlotte Patterson, Ashley Karwick; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Matthew and Brian Franks, Dennis Brubaker, David Clayton, Scott Shannon, and Paul Dean Koopman.

Memorials may be made to Bellville Hospital Auxiliary and American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Lydia "Irene" Karwick will be held Monday, July 18, 2005, at 12 noon from Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel in Bellville, TX, with Rev. Wayne Middleton officiating. Interment will be at the Oak Knoll Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 17, 2005 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel, 842 E. Main, Bellville, TX, 77418
