Willie (Bill) Hein
January 23, 1923 - February 12, 2013

Willie Fred Hein, 90, of Wallis went to be with his Lord February 12, 2013 in Wharton, Texas following a prolonged illness.

He was born in Priddy, Texas on January 23, 1923 and was brought to baptism there by his parents. Willie moved with his family to East Bernard, Texas and became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wallis, Texas. He was confirmed at St. Paul by Pastor Nerger. Willie graduated from East Bernard High School in 1942. He went to work for Brown Shipbuilding as a welder.

Willie was drafted at the beginning of World War II on February 26, 1943 to serve his country in the Army. He proudly served in Company A 300th Engineer (C) Battalion, fighting with them in the Battle of the Bulge and on Utah Beach in the D-Day invasion. He was awarded an EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and 3 Overseas Service Bars. He documented his experiences during World War II by taking pictures which have become a legacy of his service for his family and friends.

When he came home from the war, Willie went to work at Tennessee Gas Transmission as a Plant Technician. He worked for TGT for 42 years retiring in 1986.

Willie married his life’s partner of 66 years, Dorothy Lee Ludwig on November 17, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sealy, Texas. They made their home in Wallis, Texas where they raised their three children, twin girls Marilyn and Carolyn and son Willie Fred Jr.

He committed to his Lord by holding every church office at St. Paul except the church secretary because he was unsure of his spelling. The one church office he cherished the most was that of Sunday School Superintendent. For 20 years, he lovingly served the children of St. Paul’s whom he always referred to as “His Sunday School Kids”.

Willie also loved to farm corn and cotton. He would rather ride on his tractors than anything else. After retirement, Willie also went into the cattle business. He enjoyed being on the ranch especially carrying buckets of feed along so he could feed his bulls to keep them tame. This enthusiasm had extended down for several generations including his great grandson Isaac.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Marilyn Standlee and husband Stan of Sealy, son Willie F. Hein Jr and wife Gladys of Sealy, a son-in-law Dale Toellner and wife Susie of East Bernard; sister-in-law Nettie Ola Hein of Sealy; grandchildren Melissa and James Thompson of Rosenberg and Keith and Audrey Standlee of Round Rock and great grandchildren Zoe, Alexis and Isaac Thompson of Rosenberg.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lizzy Hein, his 5 siblings and his beloved daughter Carolyn whom he called “Shorty”.

Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 15 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wallis. Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Ray Spitzenberger officiating. Interment was in Sealy Cemetery.
