Death of Judge Walker The remains of Judge J.J. Walker were interred in the Sealy Cemetery Monday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Rev. C. T. Sanders. Judge Walker died at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 11 at the Baptist Sanitarium in Houston where he had been taken a week previous for treatment which was thought would prolong his life. He realized, fully, the seriousness of his condition when he left Sealy, and remarked to friends that he did not expect to return alive. Deceased was born in Cahaba, Alabama, September 12, 1852. He spent most of his life in Sealy, however, coming here in 1880 from Patterson where he had lived for five years previous. He engaged here in the practice of law and for many years was the only lawyer in the town. Mr. Walker was also a practical printer and newspaper man and for several years published the Commonwealth in Sealy. Deceased was never married but leaves behind two sisters, another sister, whose home was in Alabama, died the day before death came to him, but neither knew of the other's illness. The surviving sisters are: Mrs. T. S. Sterling of Patterson, and Mrs. G. W. Foulkes of Charleston, Mo. There are also three nieces and one nephew, all children of Mrs. Sterling, they are Mrs. F. W. Norris of Houston; Miss Clara Sterling, a teacher of Patterson; Miss Evelyn Sterling, also a teacher, of San Antonio. The nephew is Mr. A. C. Sterling of Mission, Texas. Mrs. Sterling was with her brother when he died and accompanied the remains to Sealy. She and two of her daughters were the only relatives in attendance at the funeral. Submitted by: Judy Oakes |
