Death of Captain K. W. Reese At his house near Kenney, Captain K. W. Reese, after a brief illness, peacefully passed away on August 14th.
Captain Reese was born in Pike County, Alabama, January 9, 1842. He came to Texas in 1849 and lived in Austin County nearly all of his long and eventful life. During the civil war he enlisted in Parsons' Regiment at Bastrop, the 12th Texas Cavalry, and continued in the bloody struggle to the end of the war. He was married in 1870 to Miss Martha Montgomery. To this union five children were born, four of whom are still living: Mr Hoffman Reese, who resides at the old home, Mrs. E. W. Potter of Huntsville, Mrs. Woodson Tottenham and Miss Maud Reese. When we laid his tired body to rest in Oak Knoll cemetery, we all felt that a noble citizen, a true patriot, and a friend to every man in need, was gone: but we mourn 'not as those who have no hope," for above all he was a Christian, and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. For many years he was active in the upkeep of the Bellville-Chap Hill camp grounds, where many hudred were converted to Christ. "When the trumpets sounded for him on the other side I am sure they were sounded by lips that he had taught to pray" -- and may his loved one and friends some day be there to hear. G. Z. Sadler His Pastor (The funeral of Cap't K. W. Reese of Sempronius took place at Oak Knoll cemetery, Bellville, on Wednesday afternoon, August 14, Rev. G. Z. Sadler of the Methodist Church, formerly pastor at this place, officiating. All parts of this county were represented among those who came to pay the last tribute of respect to one of our oldest and best known citizens, and many friends were here from Brenham and other points. In spite of advancing years, Cap't. Reese was deeply interested in the active affairs of life, and was a member of the Council of Defense for Austin County. --Ed.) Among those attending the funeral of Cap't. K. W. Reese yesterday were four veterans of this civil war--F. Gieseke, L. Tesch, B. Eldridge and R. S. Bucer, who were brought down by C. L.
