Lindsay, Sheldon Burtchel (1935-2023)
Lindsay, Sheldon Burtchel
Obituary
2023
Sheldon Burtchel Lindsay passed away Saturday, February 4 with his loving wife Elaine at his side. He was 87 years old.

Sheldon was born July 3, 1935, in Ozark, Alabama. There he went to school and enjoyed the country life, as in hard work! He attended church with his family. He and his cousin Sandra spent a lot of time trying to stay out of trouble growing up together.

He joined the Navy in 1958 and spent four years traveling the world. He could tell some great stories from that time!

He then moved to Alexandria, Louisiana to work as a machinist and attend business school. At this time, his life changed when he met Elaine as they passed each other in the halls at school. He just adored her from the beginning. After a two-year courtship, they were married. They were married for 57 years!

They moved to Houston around 1965 when Sheldon accepted a position at Cameron as a machinist. They lived in Bellaire for 20 years until Elaine discovered the love of horses, and Sheldon rediscovered his love of them. Some time passed, and they decided to move out to the country to Simonton where they could keep horses and have all the dogs and cats they wanted. Both of them were big animal lovers. Elaine and Sheldon put many miles in the saddle and competed in endurance rides and competitive trail rides. They made many friends who also liked to ride and one of the highlights of the year was taking the horses to Bandera, Texas to camp and ride the trails at the Hill Country Natural Preserve. Those were such fun times even though there were some scary and sometimes uncomfortable moments which we look back on and laugh about. Sheldon retired in 1997.

After some years the Brazos River got too close for comfort, and they moved to the house on the hill in Bleiblerville in 2003. It was here that Elaine and Sheldon really got into gardening and raising chickens. Sheldon loved having all kinds of different varieties of tomatoes. He loved competing in the biggest tomato and squash contests and taking the produce to the farmers market in Brenham. He really enjoyed his chickie girls too.

Besides taking care of numerous animals, Sheldon loved to read, barbeque, and fix and build things. He could fix anything and enjoyed helping others by doing that, the good Christian man that he was. In his later years, he liked nothing better than to sit in his big comfy chair reading a good book with the kitty on his lap.

Sheldon is survived by his beloved wife Elaine, his sister Jean Osborne, and his dear cousin Sandra Henneman. He leaves many good friends behind.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 1:00 Saturday, February 18 at the home of Paula and Michael Little, 4189 FM 949 Sealy, Texas 77474. In lieu of flowers, contributions to your favorite charity may be made.
