Cynthia Maedgen lost her long battle with breast cancer on Wednesday, May 1, and the first thing she would say would be “Now, don’t anyone fuss about me.” Family and friends will refuse to listen, of course, because they know Cynthia always put the interests of others ahead of her own. A heartfelt recognition of this remarkable woman was Saturday, May 4, at 2:30 p.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church (11140 Greenbay) in Houston. In lieu of anything dark and dreary, the family asks that light and cheerful clothing rule the day to honor the brilliance of a woman who illuminated all who knew her.

Cynthia was born in San Angelo and she would not hesitate to cite the year: 1948. Her salt-of-the-earth upbringing by parents Georgia and R.T. “Pete” McDaniel forged the foundation for her entire life and her relationship with her savior Jesus Christ. She successfully conveyed her deep values and love of life to three children of her own: Robin Dickey age 41, Courtney Burlison age 37 and Meredith Valach age 23, devoting herself to raising them before becoming a valued member of Reynolds Media Services. Proud to see Courtney married in 1998, Cynthia gained a new smile from Meredith’s glorious wedding at Horseshoe Bay, Texas only a few weeks ago. Another instant smile formed when Robin shared his plan to marry Tiffany Roach, appropriately on Mother’s Day Weekend later this month.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, Cynthia shrugged off significant health issues as mere inconveniences, never allowing them to slow her pace or define her world. After her 24-year marriage to Will Dickey, the father of her children, she started a new chapter of her life – and met and fell in love with George Glover, whom she married in 1997. Cynthia was a rock for George when doctors had no answers, and he was taken too quickly from her in 2000. Cynthia found an enduring peace in the loving arms of Bryan Maedgen, whom she married in 2005, and in the quiet hill country farm she and Bryan created together.

Survivors include husband Bryan Maedgen and her mother Georgia McDaniel; daughter Courtney, husband Scott and granddaughters Mary Ella, Addy Scott, and Molly Kate; daughter Meredith and husband Christopher: son Robin and fiancé Tiffany; stepson Russell, wife Jennifer and grandchildren Patrick, Jack and Ella; stepson Ward, wife Merideth and grandchildren Mack, Hud and Tess; two sisters Kathie, husband Kent and Stevie, husband Randy along with numerous nieces and nephews. Her beloved daddy R. T. “Pete” McDaniel passed away in 2011, and Cynthia previously bid farewells to relatives who included Mary Eleanor and Robert K Henderson.

Close your eyes, and listen to Cynthia’s laughter – a sound that will brighten all days to come.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks that a donation be made in her honor to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., Brenham. To post a tribute to the family, visit www.memorialoakschapel.com.
