Retired Colonel Robert T. Townsend, 90, of Brenham passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at Scott & White Hospital-Brenham. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Fuller Townsend of Brenham. Col. Townsend was born March 6, 1922 in San Diego, Calif.

He was a follower of Jesus Christ and a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Brenham.

Col. Townsend grew up in Houston and graduated from Texas A&M in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout his life, he was a faithful supporter of A&M and served as class agent for his class.

Col. Townsend served in the Army for 30 honorable years. During his career, he served his nation around the world and during many conflicts, including the Philippines and Japan during WWII, and in Korea, Vietnam and Africa. Upon retirement, he resided in Weimar and ranched for 15 years. Subsequently, he moved to Bryan and Brenham.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Mary Fuller Hintzel.

Other survivors include his brother, George P. Townsend, Jr., of West Hartford, Conn.; his sons, Colonel (U.S. Army, retired) James Townsend and Lieutenant Colonel (U.S. Army, retired) David Townsend, both of Valrico, Fla.; one stepson, Bill Fuller of Bellville; three stepdaughters, Kathleen Jones and Libby Kiecke, both of Brenham and Beth Stark of Chappell Hill; and 11 grandchildren, Lieutenant Colonel Ginger Norris (U.S. Army) of Alexandria, Va. and June Kuypers of Orlando, Fla.; Martin Fuller of Lubbock, Wesley Jones of Huntsville, Jenny Bradfield of Bellville, Adam Kiecke of Katy, Aaron Kiecke, Rachel Kiecke, Julianna Stark and Elizabeth Stark, all of Austin, and Robert Stark, Jr. of Chappell Hill; and six great-grandchildren, Grady Norris of Alexandria Va., Kenley Kuypers and Braden Kuypers of Orlando, Fla., and Perry Lynch Hintzel, Nicholas Bradfield and Olivia Bradfield of Bellville.

A Celebration of Life Service was at 11 a.m. Jan. 15 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Brenham. Internment was at 11 a.m. Jan. 16 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
