Barbara Gordon Hazard, cherished daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend died peacefully Monday, the March 25 at home on her ranch in Bellville urrounded by her beloved family and dogs.

From her birth in Kansas City, Mo. on Feb. 9, 1945, Barbara nourished those around her with love, kindness and quiet grace. She was the devoted daughter of Beverly Gordon Cooper and Joseph Gordon, and grew up in Clayton, Mo. After high school, she attended the University of Oklahoma where she studied accounting.

An incredible amateur photographer and world traveler, Barbara was most at home at her ranch in Bellville with her horses and dogs Bear and Cleo. She competed throughout Texas as an accomplished cutting horse champion, and was honored as Rookie of the Year. Barbara’s love of animals drew her to become an active volunteer with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She also served as a Precinct 2 Election Judge in Austin County for several years.

A woman of great compassion, empathy and caring, Barbara’s smile could light up a room and endeared her to everyone who knew her. Her strength, dignity and indomitable spirit leave an indelible mark on her loved ones who mourn her loss deeply.

Barbara is survived by her adoring husband William (Bill) Hazard and their faithful dogs Bear and Cleo; her son Stuart Smith and daughter-in-law Limor; her daughter Shelly Hendry and son-in-law Brian, and her brother Richard Gordon and his wife Marge. Barbara was present at the birth of each of her precious grandchildren, Audrey, Harry and Samantha Smith, and Mirren, Abigail, Sarah and Andrew Hendry whom she loved to spend time with at the ranch.

Preceded in death by her parents, Barbara’s devoted dog Harley is also waiting in heaven for her to throw the ball one more time.

A private celebration of Barbara’s life will take place in Houston. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family asks that any donations be directed to the American Cancer Society, the Brenham Animal Shelter, or any animal shelter of your choice.
