Funeral services for Fred C. Schluens of the Millheim Community were held from the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 with Rev. Willie Rotter officiating. Interment was in the Millheim Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Ted Higginbotham, Ryan Klaus, Paul Landua, Matt McGill, Dennis Landua, Bob McGill, Shannon Johnson and Lloyd Klaus. Honorary pallbearers were Randall Tipp, Ronald Fitch, Jeff Kloss, Kenny Hendry and Roy Klaus.

Mr. Schluens died at his home in Millheim on Monday, April 19, 1993 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 2 days.

Fred C. Schluens was born December 17, 1910 in Millheim the son of Charles and Frieda (Himly) Schleuns. When his father died suddenly, Fred was 13 and the oldest of the family, so the many responsibilities of continuing the farming, ranching and horse-mule trading business fell on him. In 1930 Mr. Schluens became the second person to raise peanuts in Austin County and continued raising peanuts in the county until 1991. He became a pioneer in developing Polled Brahmans.

On November 18, 1935 he married Evelyn Goebel in Millheim. A lifelong resident of Millheim, he was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville, The American Brahman Breeders Association, was a director of the Texas Mid-Coast Brahman Breeders, Inc. of Wharton, Order of the Sons of Hermann, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association of Texas, the National Cattlemen's Association and the Southern Farm Bureau. A (sic) avid reader and family man, Fred loved fishing, gardening, hunting, trapping and politics.

Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Fay and Shannon Johnson of Millheim, Nila and Lloyd Klaus of Cat Spring, Lola and Dennis Landua of Bellville and Karen and Bob McGill of Princeton, Indiana; grandchildren, Ted Higginbotham, Mary Beth Ackley, Beverly Donnell, Roy Klaus, Ryan Klaus, Paul Landua, John Landua, Matt McGill and Clay McGill; great-grandchildren, Sean and Megan Higginbotham, Michael and Kimmie Donnell; sisters, Anita May of Freeport, Birdie Schroeder of Sealy and Celesta Meissner of Bellville.

He was preceded in death by his wife on February 19, 1992, parents and a brother, Sidney Schluens. In lieu of usual remembrances, friends may make memorials to the St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville.

Schmidt Funeral Home of Bellville was in charge of the funeral service.
