Melvin Henry Kiemsteadt of Kenney peacefully passed away to be with his Lord and Savior on March 2, 2013 at Scott & White Hospital in Brenham.

Melvin was born on July 29, 1920 in Kenney to Fred and Laura Kiemsteadt. A life-long resident of Kenney, Melvin graduated from Bellville High School in 1938.

He married Lucile Meier, the love of his life, also of Kenney on Feb. 9, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Phillipsburg. Melvin was a proud veteran of the US Army Air Corp serving during WW II in the Pacific Theater.

Melvin and Lucile made their home on a small farm in Kenney. After working for Austin County, First National Bank of Bellville and Austin County State Bank, he became the Administrator of a nursing home in Bellville during the sixties.

When Lucile was diagnosed with polio during 1951, Melvin assisted her in her successful fight to overcome paralysis.

In March 1952, they welcomed their first son, David. Jerry, their second son was born in November 1956.

Melvin enjoyed raising cattle and gardening. He enjoyed his proudest moments watching his sons and grandchildren perform in various sporting and school activities. During these years, he served St. Paul Lutheran as a councilman and in other capacities. Throughout his life, Melvin was known a kind and generous, father, grandfather and friend to many in his community. In his last years, he was cared for by Esther McNeese who gave him excellent care and companionship.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile, his son, Jerry, his parents, his brother, Fred and his brother-in-law, John Kessler. In addition he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Esther and Henry Haar, and brother and sister-in-law, Leslie and Earnestine Meier.

He is survived by his son, David and his wife Linda, and daughter-in-law, Cindy. Grandchildren surviving are Jason and Jennifer Kiemsteadt, Bethany and Rob Sherrard, Amy and Zach Hale, and Clint and Amy Kiemsteadt. Melvin took great delight in his great-grandchildren, who knew him as “Papa K”. They are Laurna and Jay Jay Kiemsteadt, Lukas and Ellie Sherrard, Owen Hale, Kennedy, Graham and Luke Kiemsteadt.

Melvin is also survived by his sister Mary Jo Kessler and his brother-in-law, Leroy Meier and his wife Nora, and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.

The family was present for visitation on Tuesday, March 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 at Knesek Funeral Home in Bellville. Services were held on Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Phillipsburg. Interment in the Church Cemetery.

Melvin’s grandchildren and their spouses will serve as pallbearers, and honorary pallbearers will be Melvin’s great-grandchildren.
