Emma Jan Gay passed away unexpectedly on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 in Houston.

Upon arriving in Bellville in 1984 with her eldest three children, and soon one on the way, Emma devoted herself to raising her children, aiding in her husband’s budding medical clinic and building a circle of friends that would become as close as family.

Over the next few decades, Emma was often seen splitting her time between multiple Bellville ISD campuses to volunteer and attend the never-ending functions, athletic games, occasional principal visits, and awards ceremonies that come with raising four children.

Her energy and creativity seemed endless; between her volunteer activities, Emma devoted time to her other passions of art and gardening.

If you knew Emma well, you knew not to knock on the front door to find her, rather, walk around the house to find her up-to-her-elbows in potting soil amongst the flowers in her garden. It was also a special treat to her dear friends and family to watch the mail in anticipation at Christmastime to see Emma’s hand-drawn Christmas card.

Emma’s greatest joy was to be surrounded by people having fun. Whether it was a Christmas party, pool party for her kids or a 4th of July, with too many fireworks to count, Emma’s playful spirit insured that everyone had a fun time.

Emma was born in Baytown Sept. 18, 1956 to Jack Reber and Earline Douglas Reber.

Emma is survived by her four children: Philippe Gay of Perth, Australia; Suzanne Gay of St. Helena, CA; Christina Gay Fitzgerald of Austin and Paul Gay of Brooklyn, NY, and her former husband, Charles Christophe Gay. She is also survived by her mother and two siblings: Kay Nieri, of Arizona; and Mark Reber, of New Braunfels and is preceded in death by her father, Jack Reber.

Memorial services for Emma were held on Monday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

In lieu of gifts, donations may be made in her name to the Austin County Animal Rescue.
