Gabig, Helen A.
Obituary
2023
Helen A. Gabig passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023. Born June 2, 1926, Helen grew up in Houston. Helen graduated from St. Agnes High School and attended the University Of Texas as a nursing student. In 1947, she married her knight in shining armor, William A. (Bill) Gabig. Together, while Bill worked with Shell Chemical Company, they lived in Houston, New Orleans, Houston again, New York, and finally, Houston a third time. She was the mother of eight children, with at least one child born at each stop.

Following retirement in 1986, Helen and Bill moved to Bellville, TX. Helen’s dream of a family homestead came to fruition at their home, The Gathering. There, Helen relished time with family and friends and hosted multiple family events, barn dances, and holiday celebrations, including the seven weddings of her children and grandchildren. Helen was active in the community in both Bellville and Houston. In Houston, she devoted time and energy to the Cenacle Retreat House. In Bellville, Helen worked with the Bellville Historical Society and attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Socially, she treasured her time with the Quilt Guild and the Friday Night Gang. Helen will be remembered as the center of her large family and for continually welcoming new grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and spouses as the family continued to expand. She was a master conversationalist and a keeper of family history.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill; three sons, Patrick, Tom, and Paul; daughter Annie Wingo; and son-in-law, Carl Yarbrough. She is survived by four children: Mary Ann and Greg Plate (Austin, TX); Jack and Birgit Gabig (Austin, TX); Retta Yarbrough (Fraser, CO); Annie’s husband, Kevin Wingo (Bellville, TX); and Michael and Regina Gabig (Katy, TX). Grandchildren: Jenn and Mark Goodner (Austin, TX); Patrick and Andrea Plate (Plano, TX); Markus Brazill (Washington, D.C.); Sasha Gabig (Austin, TX); Emily Yarbrough and Chris Skibba (Fraser, CO); Sean Yarbrough and Ana Cofresi Yarbrough (Fraser, CO); Will and Ashleigh Wingo (Bellville, TX); Katy and Tanner Heidemann (Brenham, TX); Claire Wingo (Bellville, TX); Wesley Gordon, Wyatt Gabig, and Natalie Gabig (Katy, TX). Great grandchildren: Tylar and Spencer Grant (Norman, OK); Wilkes and Graham Goodner (Austin, TX); Arabella and Flynn Plate (Plano, TX); Beckett and Sloane Heidemann (Brenham, TX); Fletcher and Rainey Wingo (Bellville, TX).

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with a reception in the fellowship hall. Private interment will follow in the Gabig Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Bellville, YoungLife of Bellville, or the donor's favorite charity.
